TCF Study Tour Teachers Complete Turkey Tours

80 American teachers from across the United States visited Turkey on study tours organized and sponsored by TCF. The teachers' itinerary took them to Istanbul, Bursa, Iznik, Efes, Kusadasi, Cappadocia, Konya and Ankara. The groups visited the BJK Schools, Darussafaka High School, Karacasu Atakoy Primary School to learn more about the Turkish school system. Highlights of their program also included an "Ebru" workshop, a briefing by Turkish educational ngo's, visits to the Iznik Foundation and the Catalhoyuk excavation.

TCF Teacher Study Tours have hosted 296 teachers since 2007, selected by local World Affairs Councils from applicants who participate in teachers workshops on Turkey, which are organized by the Councils with support from TCF. Over 2000 teachers have participated in these workshops to date. Please visit here for impressions of the study tour participants.

TCF Helps Promote Turkish "Vakiflar" Museums

A grant from TCF to "Hali" magazine, a UK based publication, will help bring the rich collections of the newly opened "Vakiflar" Museums (Museums owned by the Turkish Foundations General Directorate) to experts and art connoisseurs worldwide. The TCF grant will help a Hali team to travel to regional "Vakiflar" museums in Istanbul, Kastamonu, Tokat, Konya, Gaziantep and Edirne to report about the restoration of these important historical buildings and the previously unknown or unseen precious carpets, kilims, textiles and other cultural heritage items they house.

Turkish Contemporary Artists at Philadelphia Museum of Art

A TCF grant has been awarded to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to support the presentation of works by two contemporary Turkish artists, Inci Eviner and Gulsun Karamustafa, at the Museum's upcoming exhibition, Live Cinema/In the Round: Contemporary Art from the East Mediterranean.

A Ramadan Tradition: Karagoz

To revive the disappearing traditional Turkish performing art of Karagoz shadow puppet theater, in 2008, TCF produced a collector's edition DVD set of 20 Karagoz plays. Performed by world renowned master puppeteer Metin Ozlen, the plays are the richest recorded collection of Karagoz plays and, in addition to educating and entertaining audiences today, serve to preserve a precious tradition for future generations.

The collection is now sold at museum stores in Turkey and is also available at Turkish Culture Shop.
